I’d not heard of exploding kittens.
It's available as an app on Android and Apple so you can try it before buying the physical version. It's a great game.

It's a really good game, plus the artwork is lovely.
If you want small quick games I can recommend Dobble, Loveletter and Hanabi. Dobble is definitely child friendly, the other two are logic based so it depends how much your son is into that.
They're all playable by 2 people (inc. exploding kittens), but Hanabi is better than the others in this respect. The others become quite luck oriented when played with 2, Hanabi stays great.

I played Takenoko the other day. Really liked it.
Been playing Exploding Kittens with my 7yo.
