I grew up near Coventry. Can't say I ever noticed anything particularly cultural there.
Wasn't the Ring Road the first of its kind? Maybe they mean that...

Its not a prize for being the best cultural city though is it ?

Coventry: there'll be a lot done on Godiva/Leofric, Watches & Sewing Machines, WW2 destruction, The Specials, & a knee belonging to Gary Mabbut.
Being the birthplace of the modern bicycle might get a mention but the car industry focus will dwarf that.

Oh, is it not; seems misnamed then. Still, in that case, why not Cov!

Don't forget the glorious 1987 FA Cup final.
I worked in a pub in Kenilworth for a couple of years around 2000. There were people there who'd, every Saturday, get tanked up, then wander home to stick on their VHS of the occasion.

The relocated timber-framed buildings on Spon Street indicate with better town planning, and less WWII bomb damage, Coventry might be thought of as more related to Stratford (upon Avon), than the most southerly area of the West Midlands.

You're right - that street is lovely, shame it's so short. my grandparents lived and worked in the city before and through through the bombing, I should maybe ask them sometime if the rest was like that.
Whadaya know. We found some culture there :)

Must be nearly 30 years since I visited Spon Street,
and, it did seem to be over just as it got started.
Guess this announcement makes it a good time to re-visit.

Yup similar crowd on my matchday shifts at Strikers bar Highfield rd.

better town planning,
Iirc the bomb damage was the catalyst for redesign of urban space to allow big trucks to drop off goods to shops. Prior to this all the central streets were too narrow, similar to 'the shambles' in York.

Look at "The News" this way.
What do you connotate with the word serious?
How do news outlets want to be viewed?
Unfortunately 'bad news' has to be taken seriously and people will usually agree when something terrible is printed that it was indeed terrible.
Good news is much more subjective and people want to feel informed rather than entertained when it comes to news.
Happiness isnt taken seriously. -

I just threw up a little.

I believe Britten's War Requiem was premiered in the new cathedral, is that cultural enough?

I assumed it was all about the specials

So an authentic Medieval town centre. Were there any city walls extant?
-
• #50320
I think a couple of sections remained. There was a pub called the town wall tavern too: http://realalerambles.co.uk/history/T/town_wall.html

Yup. Herbert Art Gallery had some good exhibitions whilst I was there too. One that stands out was Hiroshima, with a moving talk from a survivor.

I'd say the Coventry Ikea is the best of the Ikeas. Certainly in England. I've also been to one in the Canaries and one in Hong Kong and it's better than those too.

The Herbert is excellent, I had to visit it for work this year (checking out an exhibition) and was really impressed by what they were doing there.
-
• #50324
I thought they were all the same where ever you were in the world.
Like Lidl.

Nth-ing the excellence of the Herbert; the transport museum also has an excellent collection of early cycles on display...
Ed, it’s all your fault.
