I believe Britten's War Requiem was premiered in the new cathedral, is that cultural enough?

Yup. Herbert Art Gallery had some good exhibitions whilst I was there too. One that stands out was Hiroshima, with a moving talk from a survivor.

The Herbert is excellent, I had to visit it for work this year (checking out an exhibition) and was really impressed by what they were doing there.
