  • The hilarious thing is that some guy randomly found it two weeks ago and thought it was a feature or something:
    https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/79235

    hurray, you're the admin now

    Best 0-day discovery ever.

  • At least we have all these cool new emojis.

  • I can't remember the OS version but i recall doing something similar a few years back with my brother's university provided Mac. They were bios locked and users had no install rights so I went about fixing that... Removing a RAM stick holding the power button whilst booting would reset the BIOS pw, then booting in terminal mode or whatever it is. Removing some setup file created after the initial boot. Creating a new admin account then granting admin rights to the user account. Pre OS level encryption and all that so not sure if it'd still work... Scary stuff nonetheless.

  • Ha! That’s a good work-around. Currently, if you can get physical access to the machine then just booting in single user mode gets around a lot of stuff. Firmware passwords are pretty solid these days, thankfully.

  • I remember back in year 7 seniors we still had win 3.1 machines in the computer labs and in order to access solitaire we had to use some msworks exploit to trick windows into give you elevated write access to some system ini file to turn the games add-on back on , felt like a hardcore hacker aged 11 fucking up the IT depts hard work. no idea where the instructions came from but half our year could do it.

  • I was more childish l33t. Installed Back Orifice on most of the PCs and enjoyed disabling the vowels on keyboards and remotely opening the CD trays which would knock text books people were propping up onto the floor.

  • Sounds similar to us embedding programs into word documents to get round the run restrictions. Managed to get original Doom up and running with a 4-player network game for about half a year if IT lessons before being shut down!

  • I don't know if it's that resources are stretched because of new hardware releases, having to come up with a new OS update/features each year for both platforms, morale or QA issues or all of the above but I do think it would make more sense to just abandon the current OS point release cycles and move to a rolling release model for everything.

It's almost certainly been thought about but I imagine the marketing department are pretty adamant about having a catchy new name each year, like they did with calling a fucking processor "Bionic".

It just seems like they need to slow things down a bit and not give themselves arbitrary deadlines for the sake of the press cycle.

  • thinking of selling, completely unsure of worth, if anybody has any need for this macbook and wants to make a sensible offer, please do, pretty darn good condition for its age.

  • Yes, potentially interested. Any idea what you are looking for ?

  • Anyone using the iPhone X with a smartwatch? Or have their bluetooth turned on all day connected to something? The battery drains like crazy. I know bluetooth is a battery killer but I was rather hoping with the 'newer' technology, the issue would be less. The battery lasts about as long on my new iphone X as my 2 years old 6S plus, which just about lasts a day....

    Bit disappointed really...

Without bluetooth, the battery lasts forever, but that's kind of not fun especially Apple want to do everything wireless...

  • Hey guys,
My keyboard on my macbook pro has stopped working. It’s treated pretty badly by my kids, has been dropped in the past and has had spillage too, but up to this point has withstood them all.
I tried plugging a usb keyboard in and that worked.
Any ideas how I can fix it?

  • Anyone have 2 x 4GB DDR3-1066 RAM cards lying about which they want to give or flog me? For a late 2009 iMac.

  • How do I sort out iCloud authorisation on my devices when each device asks for each other's authorisation? My MacBook is my main machine and an iPad pro is the secondary. Cannot get them to access the same iCloud account and sync up. Jokes! Just getting constant messages on both to use another device to authorize etc etc

  • With the advent of BLE power drain from bluetooth should be greatly reduced.

  • @duncs iPhone arrived this week. Everything worked as advertised on very.co.uk

So much faster than the old 6 plus and once I’ve sold the old phone will work out around £400 for the handset

  • Hi Guys

Does anybody know if I can import video, with an VGA/HDMI or DVI-D cable into either a Macbook Air or an Ipad?
Am looking for live view if that makes sense - i.e using the Mac or the ipad as a monitor.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Sounds like you want to push video into the laptop through a display cable? Can't say for sure, but I highly doubt it

Think you'll need a data cable, ie usb or lightning

  • What’s the deal there then?

  • There was a kickstarter thing to use your iPad as a 2nd monitor, I would assume it needs new hardware and software to do so...

  • Astro pad? Would have to be driven by another Mac though. Not really sure what your intention is tho!

  • Thanks guys, I'm looking to use a laptop as a slave monitor for an application used in surgical procedures. Could equally be an android device to be honest.

  • You need an additional device like this to bring video into a Mac, bit overkill when a basic monitor would be cheaper.

  • I get the overkill but need the portability as work across a number of hospitals. This may very well work. Thanks

  • Yes, on 2nd full charge that does seem to be much better. Managed to get almost 2 days out of the X with bluetooh on for when I was at work, so about 10 hours each day. I think what happened before was that I didn't turn off a lot of the background refresh on apps that I barely use.
