Decent ss/fixie bike?

Posted on
  • Guys I've never ridden a fixed gear bike and want to get one for shortish commutes. Ideally something cheapish but light (i.e aluminium) and with decent components (sub £500) and from a retailer that accepts cycle plus vouchers?

I've done a bit of reading and can see Mango bikes, BLB, 6KU all seem to offer models around the £300-£500 range.

Also one that will work as a freewheel/flipflop hub etc.

Any help/suggestions appreciated. No doubt this question has been asked before?!!?

  • Dolan PC?

  • On-one Pompino
    Dolan Precursa
Genesis Day One (can sometimes get for ~550£) if you search about.

Mango, BLB, 6KU, Tokyo Bikes, Foffa, Create, Quella are all such terrible terrible value and can all fuck off.

  • As above. Don’t get any of those brands you found. They’re terrible quality, extremely cheap bikes. A Dolan pre cursa or FXE, charge plug, genesis day one or flyer, on one pompino, Kona paddy wagon are all a good start

  • Thanks fellas!

Hahah - silly me for even thinking it.

Couple of people have also suggested Polo and bike (CMDR), and/or also State Bicycle Co - their Contender?

I'm tempted with a Dolan or On One as these seem to be available within budget....

  • The pre cursa is apparently the rental bike at many velodromes around the country/world. They're cheap but very good solid frames

  • Ha yes -they even say it on their website!

  • would you ride with miche pistard wheels on the road? There's a choice btwn these or a road/track version (miche x-press). I'm aware the pistard are fixed..

  • The Pistards won't have a braking surface, if wish to use brakes. You can fit a single-speed freewheel onto a fixed hub, but can't fit a fixed cog onto a free hub, so a hub being fixed/fixed isn't detrimental.

  • I would go for a rim with a break surface. Because law and safety. Selling some silver flip flops atm for £20 if interested. Comes with freewheel and cog / lockring.

  • Isn't/wasn't your brooklyn brakeless?

  • Do Eastway not make the Esaki anymore?

  • Sold Gangsta 4 months ago? still have park bike that has a brake.
    I've changed.

  • Apparently not. By the looks of things, it's been discontinued and replaced with a cheap Foffa-a-like.

Pity really, the Esaki was a belter of a bike for the money.

  • Yeah thought so hence the "wasn't" bit.
Giz a go on that, looks fun

  • Cheers for the suggestions guys, I've ordered a Dolan PC fixed with wheels that have the brake track. Was gonna go for a polo and bike CMDR also but the dolan looks better. What's the opinion on P&C bikes?
