  • Mildred's isn't vegan, is it?

I think there's one thing on the Camden menu that isn't vegan as it has cheese (maybe ricotta iirc), which is a bit odd, but it's overwhelmingly vegan.

  • Not being London (or UK) based myself I thought I could give my input on the sources that I get inspiration from:

I'll start with the king. Dr Michael Greger:
    https://nutritionfacts.org/
Here you can find thousands of videos that boil scientific papers down to short videos on the healthiest foods to eat, and how to prevent and cure disease through diet.
It really boils down to his "daily dozen" checklist which we now use to assist us in making a healthy meal even more healthy.
    https://nutritionfacts.org/video/dr-gregers-daily-dozen-checklist/

    Podcasts:
https://soundcloud.com/richroll - Here I have many favorite guests: Scott Harrison, Dominick Thompson, Bruce Friedrich, Tero Isokauppilla, Colin Hudson and many more.

    http://www.onegreenplanet.org/episode-ten-paul-watson/

    Books:
Food Choice and Sustainability - Richard oppenlander
    Eating Animals

And then for the Danes and west coast based swedes (that might be lurking). I also highly recommend the vegan mealbox from http://www.aarstiderne.com

I'd be really interested in what sources others have found useful or inspiring, blogs, podcasts, movies and so on, so please post your favorites.

  • Had a ton of veg that was just on the turn. This week I shall be mostly eating soup...

  • We went to a very vegan bring-a-dish with a friend the other night, and all the eight other guests talked about, for the full two hours we were there, pretty much boiled down to being vegan, vegan places in Norwich, bitching about the staff/work of various vegan places in Norwich, and anecdotes that completely centred around vegan tings. It was like going on a roadie club run all over again, and being subjected to hours of dull bike chat. Even Kate, who's actually vegan, was sick of it all by the end. And only two of the things we ate actually tasted any good. FFS.

On the plus side, the goulash our friend made was amazing, must acquire the recipe, and Yotam Ottolenghi's sweet potato and peanut fritters went down a treat, can thoroughly recommend those, v easy to make too

  • 'Not just soup; this is Trangia Soup'.

  • Everything tastes better cooked over meths. Fact.
Hopefully I won’t be bored of it by Wednesday. Even my colleague who enjoys shooting animals ‘just for the thrill of it’ thought it tasted good. I see that as a tiny win.

  • Everything tastes better washed down with meths.

    fixt

  • When I smell meths a part of my brain goes "oo dinner". I blame Trangias and DofE expeditions at school.

  • I cooked so much for other people this year (family / friends / events) that I completely lost the joy of cooking at the moment.
I basically eat huge bowls of sald these days, including all the things.
    So pretty much

right now but I don't give a fuck, as I
    a) did learn to make proper dressings now (hint: chili / garlic infused oil, agave syrup)
    b) learned that a salad can indeed be a (ful)filling complete meal - just get a bigger bowl, and throw enough good stuff in there, like
    c) avocado, avocado, avocado, also seeds, nuts, raw vegs, homemade croutons, etc. etc.

  • Anyone had any experience of vegan cheese cookbooks?
I've made one 'cheese' before, which was ok, but a bit rubbery. Would really like to try out some more stuff, to try to get something good for pizza and something like mild goats cheese (sort of soft and spreadable on toast). Also, a cheddar type thingy.
    Any recommendations?

  • ‘This cheese is nuts’
Some of the recipes require a lot of equipment though

  • Was looking at that one.
By equipment, do you mean non-standard equipment that will cost me loads of $?

  • Christine has tried a few recipes, the best one so far is with cashews. Used for pizzas. No idea what the source is though, you'd have to ask her.

  • Last chance for a free book for anyone in the UK. I'll post it to you for free. Else it's going to the book rescuers.

  • The author is called Mango!
Does it explain that in the book?

  • Not that I recall. I gave up on it very quickly though.

  • It varies, but dehydrator, humidifier, high speed blender etc. might be standard items in your kitchen, but I’m still saving just for the blender.

There’s a podcast on Rich Roll Podcast about her book from a few months back

  • Can even give it away! you are trying to appeal to stodgy loving cooked food addicts ;)

  • Are there any vegan duvets people would recommend?

I picked up a cheapo one in a rush from Wilko but my rooms pretty warm and I keep overheating

  • My old Ikea one was a two in one jobby held together with velcro... when it got too hot/cold you added or took one away... from memory it wasn't that expensive

  • I think there's one thing on the Camden menu that isn't vegan as it has cheese (maybe ricotta iirc), which is a bit odd, but it's overwhelmingly vegan.

As yes, I hadn't picked that up, but then the last time I went (to the one in Soho) was probably 15 years ago or so, and I haven't been to any of the expansions yet. Back then, I thought Mildred's had been much better when it was in Greek Street.

There's also a dish with an optional egg apart from the cheesy one. It's funny how they still think--with a largely vegan menu, wouldn't it be more appropriate to list the egg and cheese as vegetarian options rather than the vegan version as an option?

  • Thanks, I think it's not so much about thickness it's just that it's cheap polyester. I wasn't sure if there were other materials that were more breathable??

  • Ah I see... can't help you there I'm afraid

  • Not sure if anyone has tried the Costa christmas cake slice... I had one Sunday, nice and moist... would smash again but was quite expensive for what it was.
