Emboldened by your pessimistic appraisal of the situation, I laced the wheel up and got things pretty well tensioned. No issues so far. A little less than 1 mm of spoke sticking out of the nipples on the LH side.
Edit: right and left are mixed up below, RH means NDS/disc side.
Edit 2: 36h shimano disc dynohub. Rider weight around 65-70 kgs.
