advice needed.. what hydraulic mountain bike brakes would people recomend for bikepacking/touring?

Want something reliable, doesn't need to be v pretty or lightweight, just good at slowing me down and not going to go wrong in the middle of nowhere and preferably cheap :)

@plxarc Basic Shimano is the only choice here, provided you're not doing gnarly off road, in which case get slightly more expensive Shimano.

As it is, these are a bargain.

It’ll be some point over the xmas break I guess pretty flexible on the date. Aside from pottering around in the woods we’re not exactly gnarly mtbers just to warn you.

Alas i’m Working right through Xmas at the moment, but that might change.

Get some TRP Spykes and some decent levers. If they can stop @BareNecessities at BPW, they'll stop you and your touring rig, and for bonus points, will be utterly bomb proof, use an easily sourced Shimano pad, and I challenge anyone to break one in normal use that renders it unfixable by the roadside, providing you have a spare brake cable...

Failing that, I'd start at SLX if you are considering Shimano.

Any thoughts on planning a trip to Wales to ride, say, Afan, Brechfa, Bike Park Wales?

Going on a riding holiday (@Doctor_Cake doesn't have to ride of course, just make delicious food things) greatly increases the likelihood of Project Baby having a life long love of bikes.

I was thinking March or April for a long weekend, but if there's enough interest in January that could be done.

I've also now found - too late for our last trip unfortunately - that there are trains running to the station near BPW. Just have to change at Cardiff Queen Street and not to go to Cardiff Central.

There are a whole bunch of 27.2 posts lined up for release next year from various manufacturers, although I've got no idea when exactly. Doubt this helps you much either.

They the under saddle lever ones? I very much doubt they will, but more choice is good.

Having not used either properly before, I'm wondering how usable the under saddle lever is vs bar mount?

The KS ones were dirt cheap on ebay a few weeks ago. @branwen got one.

Bar mount is better than under the saddle but if it's not stealth routing then under the saddle is way neater.

How dirt cheap?!

I could potentially route via my vacant front mech cable bosses underneath TT.... still not pretty.
