  • Have we had this?

Hundreds of new drivers banned for mobile phone use

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42189068

Comments from the RAC disappointing and presumably reflect a wider view

The RAC's Mr Williams said: "These people have spent hours and hours and hundreds of pounds learning to drive to gain their personal freedom only to throw it all away through this foolish behaviour.
"The only consolation is that they now won't be involved in some horrific crash caused by the distraction of a handheld mobile phone," he added.

  • It's entirely possible that the quotes have been taken out of order by the BBC, but the fact that these people were 1) breaking the law and 2) endangering other people, yet the first statement is about their loss of freedoms (its a license, not a right!). Its only at the end of an article where they quote a Police officer who says

"This is not a minor offence and is never a risk worth taking because a moment's distraction behind the wheel can change lives forever.
"Our message is simple - don't do it," he added.

  • Probably due the way the RAC see this as a breach of peoples personal freedom. Instead of them nullifying that freedom and time investment through using a phone whilst driving.
