Yeah it is personal pref obviously.I ran 11-28 52/36 before shifting to my current setup. I just felt smoother in general after switching.

I did think about suggesting a semi compact as it seems the best of both worlds, but as you say, the jump in shifting is the issue. I thought trad. doubles were dead but actually they're better.
Do you have an extra long chain for a 53x32?

Medium cage. Have DA 9000 53/39 + 11/32 + 105 5800 medium mech on the road.
I am contemplating a 48/38 or 48/36 11-32 setup on my upcoming cross bikes with 6800 medium rear mech instead of 42T NW 11-32T

Big fan of the 46-34 &11-28 on my winter bike. Was always at the bottom of the cassette with a 50t.
But then 53-40 & 11-28 on the summer bike is great too.

You guys are nuts. I'm riding around on 50/34 and 11-32. And I have an 11-36 cassette for touring.

I was on a 53/39 12-25 riding around Bath, never seemed to suffer much. I liked the fine tuning ability of the close(ish) block.

Everybody said what chainring/cassette combo they’re using, but this really depends on the area you live in. For a young, strong man 53-42/28t will be fine for flat miles, however this will be challenging for a steeper/longer climbs.
I live in a super flat area, only climbs I gotta do is when I climb on a bridge going above railsways/speedway. For me 53-42/28 is really great, coz I never run out of gears, but tbf I haven’t used small chainring since last spring. When I was in the hills (North Spain around Bilbao) I had a 36/25 setup on my bike and it wasn’t enough - steep climbs were devastating.
So please look at it this way: it’s a Cannondale so Si cranks are a natural choice. However if you’re fit and live in a flat area consider bigger chainrings or smaller cassette. Note that most top-end rear derailleurs will have their max capacity limited to 28 or 29t.

Currently running 53/42 and 12-25 on my commuter (95% flat on my commutes), thinking of changing due to a knee problem to 52/39 or 12/28, maybe both? What would you guys suggest?

Ha, a friend suggested: learn to use the smaller chainring!
My chain is always crossed now when on the big ring.. maybe I should just only change that one to a smaller one.

52/39 x 11-25 on my roadie in pancake flat Holland. Too much up the block for my taste, so smaller chainrings/bigger cassette would be preferable. Or I just need to tell my legs to shut up and be faster.

Nope, just normal campag' 10s.. my knee problem is quite fresh from a small crash snowboarding, so still sore. I was assured that I could keep cycling while waiting for an mri scan..

Cycling is pretty good for knees actually but only if they’re healthy. I’d take it easy and spin patiently at least until you got your mri. It’s just not worth the risk.

J'aime les gros plateaux genre 53 pour lancer dans les décentes mais si c'est pour Lyon prends un 50 ou moins car il faut rester sur le gros plateau le plus possible. Fredo kinkin me dissais que la seule chausse interdite c'est petit plateau petit pignon.
Si tu veux avoir du rendement prends une K7 tasse a café , du confort une K7 bien étagée.
Si tu veux porter/tirer des truc opte pour un petit plateau tout petit genre 38 en BCD 130 sinon un 42 c'est suffisant même avec une petite K7.Pour Lyon je roulai en mono 46 avec une K7 bien étagée.

7.5kg, Cervelo's lightest frame in 2008, full 10spd carbon campy record. Zonda rims fairly worn, and may need a shorter stem, but otherwise it's perfect. £900!
