Is it a new install, How does the boiler know when it is up to temperature?

We run it off the internal clock, inefficiently, hence wanting to sort a new thermostat. It's about 3 or 4 years old but never installed along with a thermostat

Ok in that case look at the set up instructions for the boiler, there will be a row of connectors with two being for the thermostat.
