  • I'm not sure I'm ready to drop £200 on a hand grinder. And the handground is a nice middle ground, and is bigger than you think. See photo for scale

  • @StevePeel how is your subscription system working? Other half is thinking about getting one for her brother, and I was wondering if there's any mechanism for delaying the next shipment, as like me he doesn't go through that much coffee and wouldn't want next set of beans being dispatched before he'd got through the previous bag.
One of the good things about my pact subscription was the ability to defer a shipment until I was ready for it, wondering if you can or do something similar?

  • That's interesting, I'm definitely looking forward to trying it out.

About chaff - out of the 3 bags of coffee I have at the moment, all ground on the Wilfa, there's a lot more chaff with one bag of beans. What's the reason for that?

  • What’s the best budget grinder? I know the universal advice is to drop as much as you can afford - I’m still a student so can’t afford much. Seems to be lots of similar designs around the £20-£30 mark, are there any standouts near that price point?

  • Electric or manual?

Edit: I had acceptable results from http://www.krups.co.uk/coffee-grinder-gvx231

Good enough for french press, would not work for espresso.

Not sure how much they are but I seem to remember getting one in debenhams sale for about your budget

  • Thanks. Budget is £30 tops. Manual is probably preferable, but that electric one looks decent too. I'll be grinding for filter/stovetop, and hopefully aeropress - will this be achievable? Thanks

  • @kimchi regarding the grinder @mmccarthy suggested, there's 12% cashback at TopCashBack on The Idle Man as well taking it under £30 if you're willing to wait some time to get the £3 back. I think I can refer you as well and am willing to split the bonus with you if you like. Not really sure how the scheme works though so I'd have to check. Also it's possible the 12% cashback will expire at midnight as a cyber Monday type thing.

I actually have that Krups grinder referenced above (by @DethBeard) but didn't know what model it was until now as it came with the rest of the kitchen appliances provided in my flat. It works okay. I've used it for espresso with a piece-of-shit charity shop espresso machine. I didn't die but it wasn't the best thing I've ever drank. Interested in getting a grinder myself, especially one that fits in the bottom of an Aeropress.

  • Actually if you wait a bit on the Idle Man website it asks for your email to give you a 10% off code (WELCOME10). However, it then says

Coupon code "WELCOME10" is not valid for one of the following reasons:
    1) the code has expired 2) it is not valid on sale items and gift cards 3) you need to spend more than £30 to qualify for free shipping.

Also the shipping is £3.95 unless you spend more than £50.

  • Went for the Helor 101 in the end, combination of quality and availability (and lust of course). My situation is pretty much like yours with only moka pot coffee to this point, French press is intriguing to me.
My pots handle is in worse shape than yours...

  • Yeah had the pot the wrong way round on my job and the flame was too high.
Going to replace it with an Alessi 18/10 at some point in time. Just have to trick my mind into spending £100 on a stovetop...

  • EDIT: found a cheaper link.

Hand grinders are excellent value relative to electric ones per £ spent, so for your budget I'd definitely go manual -- you can reconsider when you get RSI :)

In addition to the Rhinoware suggested earlier, the Hario hand grinders are good. I use a Mini at work, it'll do any grind size down to espresso:
    See: https://www.redber.co.uk/products/hario-mini-mill-slim-coffee-burr-grinder?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googlepla&variant=17588775493&gclid=CjwKCAiAr_TQBRB5EiwAC_QCq0Yr5Ivf8jn7Hl7U1qpFkcdlfwHOLXq1UE0BpPOnAW9B6RYJedN4KRoCHDoQAvD_BwE

  • I have a 6 cup Alessi doing not much in the back of a cupboard...

  • I have that hario mill grinder at work, is good for aeropress (hand grinding 14g beans at a time is the limit to my colleagues patience to the noise, also I would want to grind 40g for the filter machine by hand #lazy)
Edit: the crank comes off and rests nicely down the side for slimmer footprint on the desk.

Just spotted those pretty sweet coffee tampers on Superstar components.

    £40

  • Show me when we come round..

  • Sideline for @mdcc_tester? Custom tampers to go with the topcap

  • Those Alessis are so pretty.
I have a couple sizes of the Bialetti Kona, no slouch either (black handle, not that weird blue one).

  • GF brought me one of those for christmas last year, which my mother promptly broke..
Hence me on the lookout for a replacement, which (hopefully) is more robust.

  • Yes, no problem pausing subscriptions - you get a dashboard where you can pause and alter your recurring transactions.

  • From experience they are pretty uncomfortable to use. We had a Chris King one and it was pretty heavy and didn't fit in my palm very comfortably. Although I guess if you're not making 150 coffees a day with it. it probs wouldn't be as much of a problem 😂 they do look pretty cool. (and was always a good way to spot cycling customers!)

  • I would buy a collaboration
YBCR x Design by Jorj if available

  • What's the deal with YBCR coffee? Is that done by someone from here?
I'm about to order some just because of this thread but shipping costs to Germany are like £20

  • What's the deal with YBCR coffee? Is that done by someone from here?

@StevePeel is ybcr. It's nice too.

  • 6hr death by powerpoint awaits today. Catering coffee all day. Send help.
