Campagnolo 1 x 11

Posted on
  • I want to build something over the winter and I have wanted to build 1 X 11 for a very long time. I'm doing it on a budget and I'll be cobbling the parts together via here and eBay. So my question is what combination of Campagnolo parts would you recommend for the build and can I buy a left brake lever that looks like the right shift lever? And I'm using caliper brakes so buying SRAM apex isn't an option as I believe they're hydraulic only. Thanks oh wise mechanics.

  • Can you now get a narrow-wide ring in the Campag bcd?

  • can I buy a left brake lever that looks like the right shift lever?

No, the Campag brake levers are based on the 2nd gen. Ergo (round top).

Older Ergo can be gutted, but I've no idea if the 4th gen. can be opened-up and reassembled: I'd guess that Ultrashift can, but Powershift can't.

If you use Campag cranks you won't be able to tweak the chainline with a SRAM ring, so the drivetrain will wear at an accelerated rate and the lower gears will be somewhat less efficient.

  • Not needed on the road IME; a single speed ring is though.

  • Can you now get a single-speed ring in the Campag bcd?

  • you should be able gut any campag left hand shifter reasonably simply using a punch to take off the lever blade and shift paddle, then you just remove the internals. if you use a compact campag crank you can get a narrow wide chainring to fit by filing one of the boltholes

  • The setup I used was latest 10speed Centaur. Matching levers and rear mech from separate eBay purchases with a 130bcd FRM crank I had in the spares box to overcome the single speed chain ring issue.

The left lever I gutted the main mechanism relatively easily as HelicopterHelicopter has said but I did so after looking at the spares parts files on the Campagnolo website.

The biggest issue for me was the cassette size with Campagnolo.

  • Gebhardt spring to mind, I'm sure there are others.

    EDIT
Although reading that link, I see they're not for "narrow" 3/32".

    Hmmm...

  • Thanks guys, you're amazing. So could I use the following:

Pista up front with 11 speed ring? Or would you recommend a double with a ring taken off (maybe a bash guard to assist chain keeping?).

    Any medium cage rear derailleur.

Largest Campagnolo cassette or can I use any cassette because all 11 speed is compatible with 11 speed (wheel dependent)

Any 11 speed shifters with the left internals gently removed

11 speed chain. Any? Or does it have to match the ring cassette combo?

  • 11 speed rings have short teeth and ramps & pins to aid shifting. In the context of a 1x11 set-up, "shifting" translates as "losing the chain".

You need a narrow-wide or single speed specific ring, which will have full height teeth and lack ramps & pins.

A quick Duckle suggests that these aren't available in 135mm BCD. Although Campag compact cranks use the common BCD, the bolt on the crank is offset: see the comment from HelicopterHelicopter above.

11 speed cassettes have the same sprocket spacing but the freehub patterns are still specific, so your wheels will determine what you can use.

Chains are chains: as long as it's 11 speed, it'll work.

  • I see they're not for "narrow" 3/32".

do you need 'narrow' 3/32 chainring for a 9 speed chain?

  • Yup: "true" 3/32" up to and including 8 speed only.

  • This build is going to be a cluster fuck. I'm excited.
