    I used to think folder structure was important, but search is fast now.

    I think it's probably better to concentrate on tagging files rather than naming them.

    I didn't know it was possible with Open Office until I tried it before posting :)
    Some file types don't accept tags, but you can cheat by dumping the actual file in a repository and then placing a shortcut in the working directory, because you can comment shortcuts and the comments are searchable like tags.

    If your meta data contains all the things you used to encode in your file names, then you can change your file names to something really neat...

    0000000001.doc
    0000000002.doc
    ...
    fffffffffe.doc
    ffffffffff.doc
