I don't know, I've never updated my firmware since it works, why change it?

I presumed you could plug it in somehow and do the updates since the old batteries weren't bluetooth they must've had some way to update them. Yeah, looks like you just need the charger:

Yeah in hindsight trusting a wireless firmware update was a terrible decision, I sort of hoped they'd have tested disconnections etc pretty well.

Ah cheers for that - I'll take a look and see if I can flash it myself. Fingers crossed!
