  • Talk to your bank. If their was no service and the direct debits were being taken in error your bank will refund you and it is then up to them to chase the utilities company for the money. This is part of the direct debit guarantee.

  • That's kind of what I was hoping. Would also solve Problem 2. Just wasn't sure if it was her responsibility to cancel DD or if they're supposed to end automatically after contract?

  • As far as I'm aware DDs are 'Pull' - if the contract ends, the service company should stop 'pulling' the money out. So yeah, they should just stop.

    Debt collection agencies can be told to F off too.

  • And tell them you'd like interest as it is their error. 8% plus base rate is standard.
