I think you can get away with removing the brace and using a bmx stem. But they are made to be clamped at two points much wider apart than a bike stem.. But then again probably also made to endure much greater forces than you can produce on a bicycle.
Oh, I thought I'd found some fancy parts store in Copenhagen.
I have the 22.2 version on my Kona already - it's hella flexy, even with the brace, so I wouldn't remove it.
