Not very well, ideally you'd want something at least 50mm wide.

I have 700x37c tyres under 45mm guards and I wouldn't want to go much wider. 40c would fit but be a bit tight. Not sure how 700c vs. 650b factors into it though, although I'd imagine it doesn't make much difference when it comes to width.

What’s the forum approved mudflap material? And attachment method?
I’ve got radials.

Milk bottle cartons.
Raw milk only. -

I bought the nitrile rubber sheet that someone recommended on here, and cut it to size. Attached it with a couple of nuts n bolts.
Seem to work well so far. Next time I will probably cut a wider/ longer flap for better coverage on the front.
Also may weigh down the ends with something so they don’t flap about as much.
you won’t have any of these issues if you go with Chalfies method

Cool.
Radials on my town bike...not too hard to fit.

PDW FMFs back in stock in Condor, ordered at lunchtime, already dispatched, I might have a dry ass in time for the weekend!

I understand why some people find installing GB mudguards a faff, but it's genuinely one of the jobs I really enjoy. Can't imagine putting plastic mudguards on any bike now - GBs are so solid and shiny.

do mine in exchange of beer?

I'm gonna try and squeeze my 42s under way too narrow guards because I already have them and I'm too tight to buy more.
Not looking forward to fitting since it probably won't fucking fit at all -

I bagged some yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised to see the price remained the same.
They must have found some down the back of the sofa, as I spoke to Charlie the Bikemonger last week and the next shipment isn't due in until early-December.

Yes.

This afternoon’s job. Rear needs my new drill which is coming on Sunday (old one released the smoke) and a bit of thin, flat metal of some sort to make an angle bracket.

Sooooo shiny! That looks great.

could you post a pic of the arrangement at the top of the fork, please?
the shop which fitted my GB thought it would be a good idea to punch a hole in the mudguard and secure with a bolt which locates into a nut somehow held in place by another bolt thought the brake drilling in the fork crown.
it actually isn't a good idea. it rattles around like fuck.

That’s exactly how they work. But they obviously haven’t taken much care with it. I pack mine with metal and rubber washers to avoid any movement or rattling - both in the vertical (the bolt that goes through the guard itself) and the one passing through the brake hole which intersects it.
They actually come with that hole in the guard already (at least in the front, you have to drill your own at the rear...)

right - thanks.
my arrangement is lacking any washers, rubber or otherwise. simple fix, then.
cheers!

Forgive the crude phone sketch, but this is the bolt that goes through the brake hole, which also passes through the bolt that attaches to the guard. You need to pack spacers where the arrows are to prevent movement. I bought a cheap multipack of washers from Amazon and have had enough for several installations now.

If you don’t have a rubber washer to isolate the guard from the bolt, use a few layers from an old inner tube.

Great; that's most helpful.
I had identified that there was lateral movement in that assembly when I last tried to stop the rattling by tightening up the bolt through the 'gaurd. Will invest in washers.

Search term would be "daruma" bolt for lots more installation illustrations.

Also Loctite the shit out of it

I was fitting a rear centre-pull earlier to a frame I'd riden fixed before.
The bracket I'd made to fit the guard was held on with a dome headed m5 bolt that interfered with getting the nut on the end of the brake bolt.
If only I had a short countersunk M5 bolt in my random bolts jam jar ...

Did I imagine someone using Berthoud stays on some SKS guards? I think I have one kicking about and might try using it on some longboards. Also anyone managed to utilise the under-crown bolt on thorn forks with these? I guess it would just be a case of drilling out the rivets in the bracket.
I'm being dumb -- mudguards for 650b x 40c --
would the sks bluemels wide, work?
