that is the strangest sink situation I have ever seen. Is that normal to expose the side of a top mounted sink like that?

Looks like a Butler/Belfast, no? In which case - pretty normal. Sometimes you can cut the work surface out at the front but most people leave a lip.

Never seen one installed with a section of surface in front like that, looks so odd. Like a modesty panel in front of it has fallen off
