Sourcing Bolts (e.g M5 for stem)

  • Not sure if this is definitely the right place to put this, but hey ho...

Where do people recommend sourcing bolts from (e.g an M5 bolt for a stem that I may or may not have snapped by over-torquing (despite using a torque wrench, whatever...))

Not arsed about weight - more about something that is well made and strong.

  • Yup, eBay.

Only problem being that you’ll get about 50 for half what a bike place will charge you for 4 so you’ll soon end up with a massive collection of spares.

  • I’d thought stainless would do the trick.

eBay has me a little wary though, can you (or anyone else here) vouch for them?

Edit- good timing on the above... wiggle charging £4 or so for one Ti bolt was my benchmark, so yes eBay seems absurdly cheap in comparison

  • clerkenwell screws

  • Belton and Slade - Wandsworth ... great hardware shop with everything ....

You'll need to know exactly what you want and there'll be options you've never heard of (ie washer forms, grades of stainless etc) but google is your friend for explanation of these things.

I've bought stem bolts, bottle cage bolts and washers, crank pinch bolts, headset cap bolts and never felt that I've been ripped off.

It's probably impossible to find the very cheapest seller as they'll all be quoting for different quantities and stuff so I usually pap in what I want - m5 x 20 stainless a2 - and open up a couple listings and see what's working out best for the quantity I'm looking for.

At small sizes they'll probably be fully threaded but go for a listing that explains whether this is the case or whether there's some unthreaded shaft.

  • Cheers for local suggestions chaps.

@M_V yeah it did seem a technical minefield for the uninformed - google will sort me out. Cheers

  • Yeah, I've learned quite a bit from looking for stuff like fasteners and being all "da fuq does that mean?...google...aaah".

All largely useless knowledge but still...
