Also I need to learn about flash. Using flash with old, analog cameras that is.
Halp!Level 1
I have been using a Nikon Speedlight SB-15 on an old FG, like in the Wikipedia image..basically in "M" mode - as "TTL" or whatever else just gives me hectic blinking feedback in the finder that suggest the camera won't have it, while "M" seems to steadily light up 1/60 which I guess is the local sync speed.
So far so good - it's just that I don't see any possibility to actually reduce / increase the power of the flash burst, often I would like to reduce it to allow more ambient light. Can one only "cheat" by adjusting ISO and +/-2 exposure compensation? If somebody could help - with these kind of flashes on old SLRs in general (I can also use this on, say, a Pentax ME, right?) - as well as this particular speedlight on Nikon bodies like the FG or EM that would be much appreciated.
If you have some good links to other sites explaining this stuff this would be very helpful.
Thank you!Level 2
Using flash with a Rollei from the early 1950's.
It's a Rolleicord III - Model K3B, to be precise.
It's got a "Compur Rapid X" shutter, and is apparently capable of "X-Sync". Whatever this means.
Please can somebody explain what kind of flash can be used with this camera, and what the options are.
I guess I will need an X-Sync cable to connect (it's the only option I see on the camera).
But does the flash "know" when I pull the (shutter) lever on the Rollei, and what are these old camera's sync speeds??As above - useful liks etc. much appreciated so I can read up on this stuff!
Thank you very much!

You’re going to want to read manuals specific to the lights and cameras your using. Exposure comp dial will usually manage overall exposure in TTL flash modes I think. If your flash / camera doesn’t do TTL then it’s keep it simple, forget that dial. There are a couple of basic things to know I guess:
Your sync speed is the fastest shutterspeed the flash can sync with. You can use slower. To use the flash as fill light (letting ambient light in) you can use a lower shutter speed with a lower flash power setting. You might be surprised at how little ambient light is needed before even a powerful fill flash disappears so the result is subtle but really nice. Try the guns lowest manual setting and exposing almost as normal.
Google guide numbers (GN) for flash power if you’re not familiar with what they mean. Then you can use the flashes manual modes. It’s worth having in your head as it relates equally to iso. Exposure = (distance dived by power)
Not really sure about the old flash modes for the TLR cameras.

..got a fucking iPhone 4 shot of this on my tumblr which is pretty rad actually, and on my desk there's a roll of Agfapan 25 I shot that morning, waiting to be developed.. fingers crossed I got the exposure somewhat right with those, haha.. -

It's one more Kodak Gold developed in Diafine.
Not sure where the vertical lines come from to be honest.
Gotta love the colours though. It's basically like redscale, but even better, and less faff! -

Got some more bits back from Filmdev, first 2 were shot on my new toy - a pretty battered, but cheap Olympus XA: And the last 3 are from my other newish toy - a lovely Olympus 35SP. I seem to have developed a thing for all things Olympic.

My bad - was trying to share dropbox images - something you can't seem to do easily any more :(
Can somebody please recommend a rectangular hood for a 28mm lens - like this one (but ⌀52mm screw-in or clip)
