  • next inane groupset chat question - will a Rival22 (11speed) shifter work with an Apex1 (11speed) long cage rear derailleur?

  • Is there a new DA 9150 coming soon?

  • I'm building up a 1985 Daccordi as a neo retro road bike.

    Definitely want to go Campag.

Potenza seems to fit the bill, particularly the ability to have a 32t cassette.

But, I would rather rnot have the ugly modern crank set. Athena looks so much better. But then I have to put up with the pain in the backside crank removal issues.

So, how do I get mainly potenza, in silver, with a 32t cassette but with a non ugly, non retarded, compact chainset?

  • Why do you need a compact? A 39x32 will get you up anything.

  • Built like a climber, climb like a sprinter.

You're probably right, but in all of my time riding road bikes I have never wished for a higher gear but always want a lower one, on every ride.

My current road bike which will be replaced by this bike, has a compact. I can't remember what size sprocket it has on the cassette, mind...

  • You can get polished alloy compacts, from the likes of TA and Stronglight, so probably worth checking them out.

I assume you want polished alloy for that retro look?

  • This.

Spa Cycles have some nice looking one that you can choose with TA ring.

Even the one with the cheap ring costing £25 work well.

  • There were polished Athena cranks with UT axles, 10s. They work fine with 11s in my experience.

  • I've got a cabled S-Works Tarmac with 7800 DA on it. Can I run Di2 neatly on it? Will it require drilling? I have a sudden dislike of cables for some reason...

  • Externally or internally routed? I'm guessing the former...

  • If you could overcome you passion for drilling. Etap.

  • I think I’ve got a silver Athena 11sp compact chainset in the loft if you’re interested?

  • That's good to know. I'll see how things develop and be in touch. Is it the one with the impossible to remove cranks? Powertorque?

  • Which is what?
    And costs how much?

  • Cycle retro. Got it.

  • yes. 11spd road and cx stuff (and all 10spd stuff iirc) has the same cable pull, only 11spd mountain is different.

  • Sram says no
    Apex 1 RD:
COMPATIBILITY 10-speed and 11-speed SRAM 1x™ road systems

    Rival 22 Mechanical Shifters:
    COMPATIBILITY SRAM RED® 22, Force 22 & Rival 22 Yaw™ front derailleurs/ Exact Actuation rear derailleurs

But they're both exact actuation as far as I'm aware so I can't see it not working. I've got rival 22 but never tried the Sram 1x groups, nevermind mixed them

  • It's a 2005/06 bike. External.

It's not really worth it. Maybe I could run newer shifters that have hidden cables with something like Nokon? Actually what is the go-to aftermarket cable these days? I think Nokon fell out of favour a bit.

It does depend if there's something wrong with the RD or the shifter too. If they're broken in some way then it's upgrade time. Or maybe I'll downgrade the DA to a newer Ultegra or something. Hmm.

  • Thanks but no thanks. Shimano-only.

  • thanks @slothy & @PhilDAS. Gonna go for it and see.

  • @slothy is right.
The details are hidden in SRAM blurb:
    SRAM rival 22 shifters compatibility:
    SRAM RED® 22, Force 22 & Rival 22 Yaw™ front derailleurs/ Exact Actuation rear derailleurs
    SRAM apex 1 RD pull:
    EXACT ACTUATION

Also I think I'm running a similar set up on at least 1 bike.

  • Yokozuna Reaction are the best if you don't have awkward cabling with tight turns.

  • This, very much the best.

Other option to reduced wear and tear is the Jagwire Elite Sealed Shift Kits, which allow the entire cable to be sleeved right to the derailleur.

  • How do they work with the existing cable stops? Do you drill them out or clip it / zip-tie it around them?
