My old man drove about in his work van for 9 months with no tax purely because he never got the reminder and then didnt realise. Came out a job one day and had a clamp on his van. Had to pay the fine and get the road tax that he would have done anyway had he realised.
Proper shit show it was, and that is all down to the doing away of tax discs and trying to save money which in effect makes people forget and not pay. Also fuck knows how he never got stopped by the police consider he drove it min 5 days a week... Joke
I dunno about anyone else but I've got mine on direct debit now because I will forget.
BTW he was insured and had mot, just no tax.
Its also a bastard that tax doesn't carry over when you are buying and selling as many things now.
