But a frame should fundamentally be about function and about engineering
Do you ride a recumbent?

This works quite well

Have you read the Kirk thread on Velocipede salon? I agree the stays are aesthetically challenging, but they are designed for responsiveness and handling. I’m not inclined to argue with that, as David Kirk is one of the most respected frame builders around.

I think he used some 'creative physics' to justify there shape tbh ;)
-
• #1933
It's cool though since they're kind of his signature. If you don't like it you don't buy a Kirk, simple as that
-
• #1934
Yeah, don't get me wrong he makes great bikes I just am not sure you can attribute said ride characteristics to wobbly stays. ;)

Love it.

It's a calling card, and there's nothing wrong with that, a lot of (hip) frame builders have them. I for one, think they look amazing and that bike is so spot on, but then I love the paint on this too so...

Don't get me started on richard Sachs....
-
• #1938
they're kind of his signature
I, cynically, think that has more to do with it than physics and it's a smart move on his part too: you can readily spot one of his frames from a distance (cf Bates and Hetchins).
And walk the other way.

Velocipede salon
Seems you need to register to read.
Which I was going to do, until I read "This Salon is where bicycle artisans..." and GTFO.

I’m not an engineer or a frame builder so will defer to others, but i was struck that Dave Kirk describes his approach to design as whittling away extraneous details. His (lovely) dropouts, for example, are called ‘triple f’ (form follows function). That doesn’t seem consistent wth the view that his seats stays are a stylistic frippery.
Fairly sure that I didn’t register for Velocipede Salon, but the smoked out threads are a fascinating read, and well worth registering for if you are interested in custom frame builders. This is thread I am talking about:

I did a photo shoot with Pegoretti once, he said that when a customer asked him to paint a bike for the first time he told them, no he's not a painter, hes a builder. The customer said they didn't mind and he could just do what ever he wanted, so he did that as a joke. Other people asked so he kept just doing it. He maintained hes not a painter.

Well dug up, interesting reading, thanks for that!

That's interesting: explains why there's a "do whatever I want" option on the website.
For someone who isn't a painter, he does some amazing work.
I asked Hoops to draw upon one of his stock jobs when he sprayed my Max.

That's cool, but who actually manufactured the frame 😂?

It's a Ritte Bosberg. I don't know who mfrs those. Paint by James Terrani, from an original design by Alex Ostroy.
Maybe that's the problem. I don't see flair. I see fugly and pointless.
