  • I just wanted a bit of clarity on what the consequences and cost would be, To be honest from the comments that did refer to the original subject, I'd be looking at either a talking to or a £30 fine. And in all seriousness if that's actually the extent of the risk that other cyclists in their experience have faced then I do feel I received the needed clarity on it.

  • You might also have your bicycle confiscated for being unroadworthy.

Consequence #1 - people think yer a pranny

  • If you read my earlier post, that is about the sum of it. You will most likely be told off and sent on your way, assuming that our "clever" coppers notice that you are riding brakeless in the first place.

IMO our laws are a bit "simple". Making people ride fixed bikes with brakes is for "worst possible case" scenarios, ie where the rider's skills are innadequate to handle the bike safely. I've just spent some time in Barcelona, and rented a brakeless fixed bike and it was nice to know that I was conforming to the law of the land whilst having fun on the seafront.

Consequence - That you kill someone and go to jail for it.
Cost - I dunno what a good lawyer costs these days, CharliefuckingA probably does.

If you are examining potential the cost of riding brakeless, there is no point in assuming anything other than the worst possible outcome of doing so.

You might get noticed by a rare, on-the-ball copper, they might decide to pull you over for it, they might decide to fine you or prosecute you for it. If you kill someone you WILL have to deal with it.

  • You might also kill someone
