  • perfect, thanks, have been to Ghent on a short stopover, so know it's a great place. Ta.

  • this was our second time this year. Trained it over on the saturday, stayed someplace 20/30ish mins walk from the velodrome for 15 euros a bed. Dumped our stuff then grabbed some food and off to the velodrome. Got hammered on Primus beer, watched some cycling, danced to cheesy europop, jumped over growing stacked empty beer glasses in the middle of the velodrome, got stopped by security, carried on, a couple of mates got kicked out rather bizarrely because of the beer glass jumping (last time it was bin jumping) so we ended up in Cafe De Karper next to the velodrome (owned by Iljo Keisse's dad) getting wasted until the early hours. Staggered back to the hostel, very hungover breakfast somewhere in Ghent, then back on the eurostar.

Fun times and cost about 150 euros all in

  • oh and we had seating tickets and spent pretty much the whole time in the standing area so all the talk of seperating ticket holders was predictably not happening

  • Anyone going this year?

  • Yep 4 Eagles going over for Saturday night :)

  • Lovely, see you there, I'm on the Eurostar on Saturday pm.

  • Nice one. My plan is;

Drive over using Eurostar car thingy in the morning
    Drive to Ghent
Find bar to watch Arsenal v Spurs
Afternoon in Ghent with wife & 2 club mates
Evening at Track Block H Row 11 seats 283-286
Drive back after breakfast & wander around Ghent

    See you there

  • Eurostar / Drink
    Hotel / Drink
    Bar / Drink
    Restaurant / Drink
    'drome / Drink
    Bar / Drink
    Hotel / Drink

    Repeat, racing optional.

  • Don't forget to eat one of their famous hot dogs at the Stadium ;)

  • Romantic times...

  • I hate hot dogs. I tend to fill up on frites in town, maybe dabble in one of their cheap burgers..

  • Big spoon or little spoon
    Big spoon or little spoon
    Big spoon or little spoon
    ...

  • The stadium hot dogs are a once-a-year treat...an acquired taste. I usually fill up beforehand on the little bowls of salami & cheese cubes at the House of a Hundred Beers :)

  • Centercourt on Thursday, seats Block K row 1 on saturday. Yasssss.

They also announced programme and riders yesterday.

  • Alas part of a group so will be in the 'VIP' area of the velodrome on the Sat night

Might be fun to see what that is like, or whether you find an Arse-Spurs game..

  • Think I'll be here for kick off (wearing a Spurs shirt);

  • That vip area is a tent not even trackside . A bit like going to a match and staying in the understairs pie area.

  • You could also check "Celtic Towers", they usually have some games on. You could also get lucky in "cafe De Karper" it's closer to 't Kuipke and owned by Iljo Keisses dad.

  • On train. Suspect I will arrive after game has finished.

Looking at h-t score, prob best to say no more. One Spurs fan to another.

  • Pretty amazing atmosphere.
Crazy smells and truly awful food.
Go for the beer and the fun

  • Well I got an earlier train, shot into Ghent from Calais at warp speed, checked into B&B (very close to the Citadel Park well done Mrs Eagle Glenn ), walked to the bar to watch the footie, disappointed at Spurs losing but drowned my sorrows with a good red, walked round Ghent for a bit, paid my homage at Plum Vainquer (and by chance bumped into my club mates), went to Cafe de Karper for a lot of beer (& a bowl of cheese & salami), tottered over to the track to watch the racing, had a hotdog (so bad they're good), more beer, bumped into more cycling friends, more beer and then staggered home.

I've been going to Ghent since 1976 when it was my first ever trip abroad. Seen Merckx & Sercu ride together, albeit at the ends of their careers. Always a spectacle and brilliant entertainment. In those days you couldn't see the other side of the track at the end of the evening - too much cigarette smoke. Apart from that the smells, noise & excitement were all the same.

    Excellent time :)

  • Got my tickets for next year (my mate queued at the door on Sunday afternoon). It's so popular now...I can remember going over and just buying tickets on the door on the Saturday evening.

Hurry hurry if you want to go next year

  • Who's going this year? I'll be in the Middelplein Saturday night for a beer or two then De Karper after

  • Have an extra ticket for the middenplein on sunday, dm if interested!
