  • Chelsea were a top side in the late 60s and early 70s. Won a European competition before Liverpool.

Mismanagement at club level driven largely by greed but not assisted by ambition and a global economic crisis, laid the club low until the Mears family sold to Bates. Although Bates was a miserable and unpleasant old sod, he initiated the rebirth of Chelsea. From a nadir in 1982/3 we won Div 2 the following season and finished 6th in Div 1 the season after that. Harding came in and together they found the cash for Hoddle, and the rest is "history".

So did Newcastle, and no-one outside of Tyneside thinks they're a top side.
