So, I have a stock 2017 brompton. Which I think come with normal easy wheels as standard, No rack..
Are these wheels better for rolling, do they work well without a rack?
-
• #3478
I never roll my brompton around but due to their larger diameter they make folding easier and look a lot better!
Theoretically, also as they are larger in diameter, and have rubber ‘tyres’ they would also make rolling smother and easier. -
• #3479
Yeah, they make it easier to move when folded
-
• #3480
but y roll when folded? y fold when you can wheel it?
-
• #3481
Fold it. roll through hallway and where it lives.
Fold it. Roll it on train carriage.Rollers are also useful for someone who carrying it isn't as easy.

fair, I wheel it shamelessly everywhere. Mid-fold in train if its not busy, full fold if so. Unfold and wheel on platforms.
My brompton also stays in a strategically shaped area under Tylko in the living next to the artisanal minimalist Lezyne pump.

Thinking about it, I like these but for that amount I'm wondering if I just buy a Ti seatpost which comes with the right clamp for oval rails.
-
• #3484
That’s a very sensible thought process.
I’ve been looking at the same options; I bought a carbon Seatpost last year for the other brompton with a top/bottom clamping mechanism and the clamp was fine for carbon rails, just found the Seatpost unnervingly flexy.
I’d be interested in your take on whichever Seatpost you buy (if you do) as that will likely be one of my first changes.

Because officious train staff won't let you through the ticket gates with a non folded bike
-
• #3486
How does it make folding easier?
-
• #3487
The back end flicks round and lands more pleasantly on larger and softer rubber wheels.
-
• #3489
Yeah - I can imagine - my end flicking is no where near as satisfying with a mudguard compared to previously mudguardless.
There is a very annoying rattle coming from somewhere aswell - suspected also to be mudguard related.
Mudguards really are shite.

Mudguards really are shite.
Better than having your arse caked in shite though

The 2017 M6L I bought for my girlfriend didn't have the eazy wheels (as I understand it), it had the same stock rollers as previous models, identical to ones I've seen on previous models. So I don't think you can take that for granted.
Her's looked like this:
Do the wheels on yours look like this?
Those are what Brompton call an Eazy wheel and afaik they're an optional upgrade you have to buy separately - you can't even choose them from the online builder.

Dunno - don’t really ride when it’s wet....
-
• #3493
On my one, pre rear rack, I had rattling coming from the little wheel to the back of the rear mudguard. You could put tape around it to identify whether this is where it's coming from.

I think I already deduced that it was that bastard little wheel after giving it a wobble this morning.
Bloody mudguards.

You're like an actual caricature of yourself
-
• #3496
Just checked, you're right!
I was under the impression they came stock now, because of some ez wheel retailers website saying they have been discontinued for that reason
-
• #3497
They have been discontinued because they absorb less energy than the normal Brompton wheels, when you have easy wheels most of the the energy from folding it up was passing through the curved tubes on the rear, causing them to break. The new wheels have been designed to break before the frame does.

My lovely wife wants assistance in finding a Brompton for her 15-minute-either-side-of-the-station riding. Both rides are pretty flat, will the 3 speed version be alright? Anything to be aware of that's not immediately obvious?
-
• #3499
If flat I'd privilege the 2 speed option, not having internal gear hub makes the bike lighter/easier to carry.

+1 what vello says.
For the hinge and the rear triangle?
