Most county council publish gritting routes, eg: http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-rights-of-way/roads/roads-in-severe-weather/winter/ but obviously that's no guarantee there will be no ice. Hope you find a suitable route.
Sounds good, I'll have a look. The bits of A38 between Thornbury and Gloucester remind me of trunk roads 20 years back (i.e. quieter) but I have no experience north of Gloucester. Lots of quiet looking lanes up there, but then you have to start thinking about ice as the year goes on I suppose.
