Thats a really good point! I knew the campags were a silly bcd but hadnt realised it would mean i cant go compact.
I guess any ISO square taper cranks (that look nice) would be fine! maybe i should also look at getting that BB out and finding a Sram crankset to keep it all matchy matchy.
I think with regards to compatibility, the crankset/chainrings are all reasonably interchangeable. Its the cassette/derailleur combo thats important to get right.
The trouble I found with 10 speed campag square tapers is they're hard to find in compact. I scoured high and low for mine, took a few months, and I paid quite a lot for them.
Chorus/Record series from 2004 had a compact variant, and there was also a ATB (mountain bike parts, when Campagnolo did them) set that had compact BCD on square taper.
If, on the other hand, you're ok with a 39 inner ring, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever :)
As far as I recall, Shimano and SRAM were the interchangeables, and Campagnolo plays differently, but you should check that with someone who knows better than I do!
