It's a marketing gimmick, Aqua Blue were struggling for a big cash sponsor. There was talk about some kind of 'new' approach to team / sponsor, I assumed it just meant the sponsor would pay more but have more control.

No, the frames can't even take front derailleurs. The marketing gimmick is them riding those frames at all.
