I got the impression there were numerous side routes that would be fun to explore with more time.

It is a lovely part of the world.
This reminds me, I always thought Shirley Toulson's book on the drovers' roads of Wales (printed about 40 years back now) would be a great inspiration for some off / on road routes. I'll have to dig out my copy
