    All previous iterations of facial recognition to unlock have just stored a 2d image of that person and then compared that to a live picture when unlocking. This can be fooled by a printed picture etc and is highly inaccurate.

    FaceID is essentially a mini xbox kinect which detects you in a 3d space. Meaning it measures distance between points on your face on a 2d plane (like android facial recognition) and in terms of depth. This can't be fooled by pictures. Because it detects using light on the 940nm spectrum it's not affected by beards, glasses, sunglasses etc either.

    It also requires attention meaning the user must actively look at the device.

    This tech has categorically never been used in consumer mobile device before.
