• Similar here, I usually have my stuff picked up from the local shop and all I did was tried to click that button... literally less than a second and it went from 2-3 to 4-5. But I see this as a blessing in disguise as I am really not sure about the facial ID thing...

And for a change, the website went live before the app, so I did it the old fashioned way...

@Sam_w, is that a London store?

  • You know facial ID has been available on android for years, right? I don't get it, throwback tech sold to the gullible...

That said, I'm tempted to try an iPhone next time I change handsets, not an X tho'... It'll be old...

  • No it hasn't.

All previous iterations of facial recognition to unlock have just stored a 2d image of that person and then compared that to a live picture when unlocking. This can be fooled by a printed picture etc and is highly inaccurate.

FaceID is essentially a mini xbox kinect which detects you in a 3d space. Meaning it measures distance between points on your face on a 2d plane (like android facial recognition) and in terms of depth. This can't be fooled by pictures. Because it detects using light on the 940nm spectrum it's not affected by beards, glasses, sunglasses etc either.

It also requires attention meaning the user must actively look at the device.

This tech has categorically never been used in consumer mobile device before.
