  • engineer who came round to look at cooker said the socket wasn't drawing any power... I assume the socket has a fuse in it that needs replacing, but I've never taken it apart, hence the need for an electrician..

  • thanks for that, but it makes no sense to me,..

  • Me either, I just went looking to see if there were any answers. I'd probably have a look at the socket (after turning off the power!) and then make a call from there.

  • I would read that but I am far too low on energy and enthusiasm. I imagine my set up is the same, my oven is wired to something, maybe a normal plug? The big red switch on the wall that usually kills ovens sure as shit aint connected to it. Prob ought to get that looked at.

After home faffing, I have decided to stay put, signed up on another 2 year fix (with my mortgage guying telling me prices are going up by the end of the week). Same deal but 100 quid less a month, going to try and over pay 10% in 2 years.

I can't move out of the bubble just yet, not yet...

  • That does sound a bit odd. That big red switch is supposed to be for oven shutdown, no?

I was going to look for a bigger place but with Brexit, fuck this place. I'll pay off my place and then see if we're not all in a radioactive sea then make another call. Warmer, drier, fewer arsehats on the roads being goals...

  • Yeah that'd be nice.

Some vendors/agents don't even let you in the house until you have sstc. So I couldn't make an offer until that was the case. (Then my buyer pulled out, and then I accepted a new offer, this is all within like 10 days)

    So, +1 that abr.

I know the guy who owns this, he did my flat a couple of years ago, highly recommended.
I'll be using him again when I move (if needed)

  • Yeah, prob, my place is a shitshow electrics wise... I may look into getting it sorted. Wiring is 'orrible.

Yeah, the shit show that is Brexit is too much or an unknown for me too, I'm even going to give up contracting and go perm, knuckle down and see where we end.

That property I went to view (that turned out to be well over priced) has been reduced to 580k already. I viewed it with mother, she was unimpressed and felt it worth less. I spent the rest of the weekend jumping out from hiding places trying to make her jump in an attempt to kick start the inheritance so I could afford something I wanted in an area I wanted to live in, also unimpressed.

  • The EA we used was very insistent we saw their mortgage advisor to see what we could borrow (then they knew if we could afford the houses we are looking at)
Did see him, found out he charges £500 'arrangement fee', got the mortgage in principle, then told him he was a cheeky cunt and we had no intention of using his greedy services.

  • I'm even going to give up contracting and go perm, knuckle down and see where we end

    woah, woah, crazy talk!

  • Just creamin' fees off every possible part of the deal. Arrangement fee. Jeez. That's a really expensive phone call.

  • Surprised it fucked the plug and socket. If the socket had a 13amp fuse in it then that should have taken care of any larger current.

Unless they didn't install it with the correct clearance and it's the heat from the actual oven that's fucking up the plug and socket.

  • I'm even going to give up contracting and go perm, knuckle down and see where we end.

Ditto, just finalising the finer points and will sign on the dotted line.

  • I prefer to have more money and more flexibility in these uncertain times.

  • I've actually worked out there is not much money it... I'm going in-house corporate so money (both perm and contract) is better than all those cool and edgy little agencies I used to bust my nuts for in Shoreditch. It's far from cool but I'll dry my eyes with my £50's.

  • I never worked for the "cool kids". Money is much cooler than a Photoshop license.

  • TBH the money is just as good, I will run a division of the consultancy I work for. I am just spreading the risk as my take home will be part salary, part day rate...plus benefits (Holiday, medical, pension etc) Equity in the Co yadda yadda yadda

  • The only benefit for me would be someone else doing all the paperwork, sorting out the pension, etc. I fucking hate all the paperwork.

  • LOL, no one uses Photoshop anymore...

  • Same. What ya bill and what ya take home are often quite different... my tax this year has been horrific.

  • I have "I don't do graphics." printed on a name plate.

  • Agreed, i'd reached a point contracting where i'd need a significant uptick in my day rate to outweigh the D level perm roles. The more senior i got the closer to parity to perm it became.

Also as my family and I get older, everything gets more expensive...houses, schools, holidays.

  • you didn't charge enough

  • So I couldn't make an offer until that was the case.

Sounds like nonsense to me...but I haven't bought a property recently.
