Miche Pistard - constant punctures

  • All,

I have recently bought a brand new pair of Miche Pistard wheels.

Whilst these are track-specific wheels, I have used them on the road. To date, I have used them only twice and on both occasions, I have punctured in both wheels. 4 punctures in 2 rides.

I have checked the tyres (Vittoria Corsa) and there are no issues with them. I am using standard Conti tubes and have already replaced the rim tapes. Additionally, there is nothing sharp in the rims so I am baffled by the amount of punctures.

Has anyone had any similar experiences? Are they just not robust enough for the road? Is it best to sell them and replace them with something more road-specific?

    Thanks.

  • Where on the tubes are the punctures?

That will tell you what the problem is.

  • I've had lots of punctures with these wheels, managed to sort it by replacing the Rim tape.

  • What width rim tape did you get?

I’ve been having the same issue with this wheelset and fit some 16mm tape this evening, which held fine for an hour or so and then then tube popped again. I’m really losing my patience!

  • over/under pumped?

  • Yeah, I've been wondering whether the pressure gauge on my pump is a bit dodgy, but the front wheel has been pumped to the same pressure (both 110) and it's held fine.

  • 110psi is very high

  • Riding track bikes at 30psi before it was cool

  • I done fluffed up. I thought 100-120 was standard?

Please teach me the ways, o wise ones!

  • Only my friends call me that.
#internetadvice I'm an unqualified idiot but I run around 80psi and its no slower, less punctures. Higher pressure gives you more vibration and road buzz which makes it feel faster but actually isn't

  • When I first fit the tube and tyre, I hand-pumped it up and it rode fine. Will give 80 a try, thanks m'lord!

  • Do you hit potholes, kerbs, ruts etc?

Poor riding, line selection and smashing your wheels against shit cause half of puntures.

Incorrectly installed, seated or inflated tires and tubes probably cause another 25%.

  • I've only actually ridden them once, haven't managed to sustain a puncture-free 30 minutes after installing tube and tyre. Onto the sixth try now.

Tried again this morning with lubed beading, no pinching and 80psi. After 15 minutes, the tube had popped again. No idea why, I've replaced the rim tape and the inside is free from sharp edges, but something is upsetting the tube. I want to send them back, of course, but bought from Wiggle on eBay and reckon they'd just not bother accepting the return.

  • Are you using the hard plastic rim tape and does it seat nice and flush against both sides of the rim? Should be ok with 110psi, I used to commute with 120 in the rear and 110 up front, 20c tyres.

Usual state the obvious run your finger round the inside of the tyre and round the rims for anything sharp, be sure there's definitely nothing stuck through the tyre that might be hidden etc etc.

  • Maybe take to your LBS, it’s far easier to diagnose a fault in the flesh rather that at the other end of a keyboard

  • Before I go and bother the lovely folk at Brixton Cycles with this again, any reason a tube with a slow puncture would not show bubbles under water? The last two attempts the tube has just gone down but there's no holes. Even did the valve up tightly. Can only imagine the tube isn't liking the pressure...

  • once upon a time, Scilly.Suffolk asked:

Where on the tubes are the punctures?

That will tell you what the problem is.

this guy is talking sense ^^^ answer that and you'll know what the problem is.

  • Sharp around the valve hole?

  • This happend to me on a pair that came to me second hand on a bike, got about 15 flats in a month, noticed after a fast corner flats would occur, tried sticky high pressure rim tape with no luck, eventually I sorted it by running insulation tape over the rim tape which made the tyres a pain to get on but it worked, no idea why but it did, good luck I feel your pain punctures are shit

  • Had problems like this with a stock wheel set when screwing the valve nut too tight against the rim. Ended up just leaving the nut off and I've never had problems with it since.

  • Are you putting the tyre on with levers? Sounds like you're pinching the tube when installing. They're not really punctures if you've not ridden them, more user error fuck ups.

  • Big bang? Little hiss? What kind of hole or cut and where? Is someone fucking with you and just letting them down when you're not looking? Are you haunted by the spirit of Scoble past?

  • I put the same wheelset on the daughters bike.

23c tires do go on super-tight but we haven't had any problems running 90psi on 35/40kgs of rider weight.

Never had any punctures either (for the record running an old Soma multi-compound and a BLB black Mamba that we never had a use for).

  • I've noticed that the same tyres will be very tight on Miche Pistards but fairly easy to get onto Navigators at work.

I'm in the 'your pinching the tube when installing' camp.
