• Was looking for a nice old steel lugged frame on ebay... ended up buying a mildly silly old carbon lugged frame instead :s hopefully it wont fail on me too spectacularly! It does look lovely tho.

Plan is to clean up the messy silver paintjob on the headtube lugs, give the rest of the paint work a bit of a polish and build it up slowly with a silver Sram Rival 10sp groupset.

    Parts list to find:
    The tricky 25.0mm seatpost
    quill stem
    bars
    wheels
    crank

Looking to keep it fairly cheap and relatively retro. Probably silver components all round tho could be persuaded by a black cockpit. will probably depend on what seatpost I find!

  • that is absolutely amazing! the paint is flaking a bit on my seat cluster lug so I'm tempted to clean it back to shiny aluminium like this one

  • Shouldn't be much work to do ,worth doing .

  • Great frame.

BBB do a 25mm seatpost (have one in my LOOK KG241). Been very reliable and simple design - you can probs acetone off the decals too: https://bbbcycling.com/en/bike-parts/seatposts/BSP-20

  • subbed - that's a beautiful frame! i also lol'd at this:

Was looking for a nice old steel lugged frame on ebay... ended up buying a mildly silly old carbon lugged frame instead :s

That was exactly me last year (see -> https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/289135/ ) so great to see someone else fall for the beauty of a classic Look.

I have a few parts floating around from that build I could dig up for you if you're interested. specifically quill and seatpost - I had the Look Ergopost but didn't want setback, and bought a Thomson in-line instead (you might want to check them out, they do 25mm seatposts setback and inline).

  • Ha. yours was such an inspiration when i bought it! have pm'd regarding spare parts...

  • zenith stem, deda piega bars and a rather natty gold kmc chain purchased!

Will sand the bars to shiny silver.

The frame came with a reasonably good condition campag square taper bb. I dont yet have cranks and dont have the removal tool so I'm on the look out for 10speed campag square taper cranks. Anyone know of anything? Have a couple of cranks on ebay on my watch list...

And 10sp campag cranks should still play nicely with 10sp sram deraileurs right?

  • The trouble I found with 10 speed campag square tapers is they're hard to find in compact. I scoured high and low for mine, took a few months, and I paid quite a lot for them.

Chorus/Record series from 2004 had a compact variant, and there was also a ATB (mountain bike parts, when Campagnolo did them) set that had compact BCD on square taper.

If, on the other hand, you're ok with a 39 inner ring, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever :)

As far as I recall, Shimano and SRAM were the interchangeables, and Campagnolo plays differently, but you should check that with someone who knows better than I do!

  • Thats a really good point! I knew the campags were a silly bcd but hadnt realised it would mean i cant go compact.

I guess any ISO square taper cranks (that look nice) would be fine! maybe i should also look at getting that BB out and finding a Sram crankset to keep it all matchy matchy.

I think with regards to compatibility, the crankset/chainrings are all reasonably interchangeable. Its the cassette/derailleur combo thats important to get right.

  • Great frame! look forward to see the build. Regarding seatpost keep an eye out for a U.S.E post, they came in 25.0 with a shim system for other sizes. I just sold my old one on here for a tenner last week!

  • Some progress! (Saddle is temporary)

I've accidentally bought both a silver campag crankset and a carbon SRAM one. Will probably go with the SRAM as the carbon bling matches some of the bare carbon frame nicely (+bling).

Anyone like to swap my ultegra brakes for your SRAM ones?

And I'm sort of tempted to use yellow cable outers. Am I mad?

  • Any chainset works with any shifter system. The chainset does not know or care. Lovely bike. I would look great with campagnolo 10 speed chorus or record and those lovely campagnolo carbon square taper cranks.

  • Which ultegra brakes do you have? I might swap for some sram force one's that I have .

  • errr not a clue sorry! they say ultegra on them and theyre a dark grey and theyre very nice...

they are on the frame pictured above. will try to take a close up photo this evening.

    are your srams silver?

  • Thanks George. Here's a photo of the ultegra brakes

  • Also...
Can anyone shed any light as to what's gone wrong here!? I've borrowed a campag BB removal tool from a friend.... But it won't engage with the BB cups because it gets jammed on the spindle! Grrrrr

I've accidentally (drunkenly) bought both a campag and Sram chainset as I couldn't decide between shiny aluminium and sexy carbon. This might just have to force me into using the campag.

  • cheers for this , however they are a bit older than I would like. thanks though.

  • Tool looks wrong.

Doubt that tool is for campaign with such tall splines

    See:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/campagnolo-cassette-and-bottom-bracket-tool/

  • thanks. sadly i think you might be right. it looks like it would fit perfectly if the spindle wasnt there! :(

  • Now with wheels! Almost there. cassette and tape ordered. Just need some lengths of cable outers and tweaking to finish it off.

According to my scales it's currently 7.6kg which I can't quite believe!? Maybe I need to find some more trusty scales

  • (apologies for terrible photo)

  • I like it!

Sram rival actually works pretty well for a neo-retro build.
