What about a trip to Brighton? If you take the train to Coulsdon it's about 43, 44 miles, and you can stop at the Red Lion in Turners Hill.

Yep, Potters Bar has Baker Arms in Bayford at about half way.
There is a pub on the Welwyn route I've always fancied stopping at. Just before the climb in Hexton, Google tells me it's called the Raven. No idea what it's actually like.
