My 6+ is 3 years old and only protected by the official leather case (arguably part of the design). Never smashed the screen despite dropping it more than a few times.
In the same period, Mrs Hammer has smashed her screen 3-4 times and it’s had a protector and various cheap cases on it the whole time.

Which TBF, did help prevent it from getting cracked.
You could argue the same about phone cases.
