  • The situation in Catalonia feels very odd.

43% turnout to the referendum, 90% voted in favor of leaving Spain. Many prevented from voting by police, some through fear. Were the non voters more likely to be pro Spain or more moderate in general?

~52% or parliament votes for independence due to 60 MPs walking out in protest at the vote being invalid.

So... 38% of the electorate voted leave and 52% of MPs backed them up.

Just feels like this is being rushed tbh.

It's depressing how many people I know who are

    1. Anti-Brexit
    2. Anti-Trump
    3. Completely pro-Catalan independence without any thought to the complexities

Seems other people's nationalism can be exotic.

The Catalan president has gamed this very well. If the Spanish government had been smarter, the Catalan nationalists would have had an illegal referendum that more than half the population boycotted because they didn't want it or see it as valid. Now the story, as largely seen from outside Spain, is plucky oppressed people facing down brutal centralist government.

  • Classic left-wing-virtue-signaling Aligning themselves with the oppressed minorities. I'm sure the older folks on the forum will have similar versions of this with Ireland.

@Dammit and @Drano - Even with the last few days events, I'm going to stand my ground and say in the medium to long term this is a very shrewed move from Puigdemont. But to just to clarify, I think the whole thing is generally disastrous for pretty much everyone else.

@Drano - out of curiosity, in your idea scenario what form would an indy Catalonia take? Totally separate with it's own currency, legal system, armed forces, etc.? Would you apply for EU membership?

  • Puigdemont has worked this very well.

To be perfectly honest I don't see how or why you would hold those 3 opinions as to me they appear somewhat contradictory, both Trumpism and Brexit feel like people attaching far more importance to their own wealth and wellbeing than the good of the community/world at large. Catalan independence, from what little knowledge I have, seems to have much of the same motivation.
