it is for holding the pistons apart when you fill the brake with fluid.
(find a piece of plastic that is 10,5mm thick and drill a hole in it for the brakepad pin.)

So do Shimano have an equivalent insert/tool when filling the hose/reservoir with oil?
I am struggling to see exactly what it’s ‘for’, let alone actually getting hold of one...if I need it.
