  • Much function. Very bag. Wow.
    Looks nice!

  • Aspiring Surly bike owner here. I'm looking for something which I can load up and take on some mixed on and off road camping tours; probably only what the uk and maybe Europe can offer because life and all that; and I probably not anything too technical like down a mountain side. Will definitely be using rear panniers (as I already have a pair) so will need to be able to accommodate a rack.

Being fully aware that this is a very broad description, I've had a look at possibly the LHT/disc trucker as this seems to have really good reviews and ticks a lot of boxes. I've seen a lot about the Troll too, seemingly a more 'off road' bike? What are your thoughts? Also are there any stockists in london were I can try these out? Cheers.

  • My instinct has always been to avoid the trucker unless you're doing looooong (very) heavily loaded tours. Might be a bit sluggish for everything else

  • Straggler with 1.7-2.0" tyres?

  • Thanks! I was dead set on the LHT until I read this thread and saw the carrying capabilities of the other models.

  • Go to Brixton Cycles. They have all the models. And about half the mechanics are either on here or used to be on here a lot more.

  • Just found out that BC have a good range in stock, and I live 2km away so popping down this afternoon! Cheers!

  • @Aroogah I went to Brixton cycles and have decided that a Troll is the one I'm after. I liked the LHT but the Troll seemed to have more versatility as an 'all rounder' for what I want. I better get saving though! Thanks for the heads up.

  • BC is awesome. Glad you found something you like!

  • Good choice :)

  • We have 3 Brixton built surlys, all fucking perfect for their job.
I have an early-ish lht. It’s a touch heavy but stripped down I used it as a mtb last winter, have commuted and toured on it as well. I wouldn’t change it for anything(maybe a disc-trucker). It’s certainly not a racer in road mode but it’s hands down my favourite bike ever. Spec’d by Lincoln at BC, @Object on here built my off-road touring Ogre earlier this year and it’s a fucking beast of a bike. +1 for BC, they know their stuff.

  • My wife has a Troll, as she’s a short arse it’s a great road tourer on slicks and and perfect off road on knobbly tyres. Really fab bike.

  • Thanks for the info on the LHT, Ogre and Troll. It's great to hear that BC have a good reputation; to be honest you can tell that walking through the door and talking to them! A lot of cool bikes and knowledge.
I am thinking of buying the Troll frame set now as next years color is gross as fuck and then saving to get it built up at BC. Currently I am looking at what I can sell to speed this process up haha.

  • FWIW BC are the largest Surly dealer in Europe. Their reputation for expertise is well deserved.

  • Does Charlie shift more fat Surlys?

  • Probably, but Brixton are still the dons.
I was massively unimpressed with the parts on the current complete lht, the equiv Genesis came with dynamo, ‘guards and rack for less. I went with 9sp xt with dura ace dt shifters. Turned out to be a great decision as I’ve changed between drops and risers a few times over the last 7years.
Liz’s Troll was stock but had been in the shop a couple of years so had been improved upon in idle moments.

  • Nice collection you guys have there @edmundro and lovely color Karrimor pannier set! Are those regular Ortlieb backroller panniers on that Troll?
Currently, I am making a spread sheet to see if I can buy all of the parts and build the Troll myself for less than the stock price of £1.8k...Probably won't be able to but I fancy a challenge and have most of the tools/stand for the job now.

  • Would love an ECR!

  • Yup they’re regular ortleibs, quite old now so don’t know if that colour is still available. Racks are a tubus cargo evo rear, passport cages and surlys 24pack front rack. I’m getting a 24pack for the ogre. My tubus tara front pannier rack that normally lives on my lht will also happily fit the troll without interfering with the 24pack.

I tried an older ecr but really thought it was overkill, a few people on here have had them and thought the same. Shortly after finishing my ogre surly released a complete 27.5+ ecr, bit frustrating by my ogre has much much better spec and I’m more than happy I went that route.
My ogre makes a fun mtb as well whereas I’m nowhere near tall enough to use 29+ as a regular mtb.

Oh, I have a steamroller too but I built that up, not bc.

  • Had a little chat with the peeps at Surly HQ, the Pacer has definitely been dropped for the foreseeable, but something that may be of interest is shortly to be released. .........

  • Hmm I was seriously considering a pacer.
