I do my DIY's by mandatory GPS, you just have to follow the route you submit exactly.
You could also submit using receipts, its a bit more complicated but not much.
I have a few routes I've made myself which I use, the beauty of DIY is the ride starts and ends at your house so you don't need to get anywhere to ride.

I did my first DIY by mandatory GPS today but I added a couple of miles extra to the route I submitted as I rode to the start point and recorded that. I then followed the route exactly....presume that doesn't matter?

That does look pretty rough.
You get this validated by gps, or can it be done with receipts? (I remember info controls on the calendar)
Do you pick up the AAA as well?
