Yeah fair enough. I want to mount a computer of some sort on my bars becuase I'm forever stopping to check my phone or map. I'd ideally like to use my iPhone because money. Also I hear Garmins are crap. Is the battery life on the iPhone a dealbreaker? Is there a consensus on here as to the best solution for accurate, easy to use and follow, long-lasting GPS that can be mounted in an unobtrusive way?

I use a Garmin but also a phone mount with one of two Android phones. Battery life is maybe 9hrs for the phone (not considering I can charge on the fly with a dynamo or spare battery). I use either RideWithGPS app or OSMAnd software.
I've not tried it yet but an app called Gallileo Pro was also recommended to me. All of these options allow you to store offline maps.
But your question just asked for a steer, what does that mean? Tell us what you want and I’m sure someone can help.
