  • Hobbyweld list two sizes of Acetylene bottles. 5 Ltr with £160 deposit and 15.9Ltr with £325 deposit.

I haven't a clue how much the actual gas costs

  • Ah OK, they never used to offer it. Propane still much cheaper..

  • This thread is giving me the weld-urge. Welding equipment must surely be a wise investment for the average homeowner? You would never have to buy a hat rack again.

  • I tried mig welding with a mate and its bloody hard. A lot harder than brazing imho. If I had the kit at home I'd ruin tons of hat racks.

  • Cheap tig welder, rent free gas. You're basically wreck less if you dont I'd say.

  • Quality seconds freeza rotor needed some modifications today...

  • Mig is easier with a decent welder. Being able to have a constant wire speed makes things easier..

  • Pub gas with tig ;)

  • Here is a picture of me looking as council as I actually am. I build frames under the name "Staal". I also share a workshop with my mate Geoff Roberts, who trained me. We have recently bought a fuck ton of tubing and other bits and bobs so give me a shout if you need a nice set of tubing (loads of stainless) or some crappy practice stuff.

  • Hello pal!

Pretty cushty set up with your workshop partner!

Got any 953 in the piles of tubes?

  • Geezer!

Yeah, I'm pretty lucky to be fair. I bought a jig off him a year or two ago and basically never left!

Yes mate, quite a bit. Give me a shout and I'll have a dig through.

  • A rather relaxed pose!

Is it common to be so far from the workpiece?

I've only done MIG, but you're right on top of it there.

  • Yeah, I look pretty chilled here! I think that's why this picture was taken.

Erm....this is just how I do it! As long as you control the temperature and don't overheat anything, it's cool. The flux should be a nice grey colour after with no (or minimal) black bits (burnt flux). Takes practice to get the brass to penetrate nicely without cooking the joint.

I use oxy-acetylene and didn't really get along with oxy-propane. A lot of very good builders use propane though and it's a lot cheaper and easier to get than acetylene!

  • Great photo! Looks like a man enjoying his work.

  • Propane?

  • Cheers Howard. How could you not enjoy building bikes! :)

  • I can think of a lot of ways 🤣🤣🤣

  • I still have the pieces they worked on for the demo, from memory the one on the left was Ryan/Robin and the one on the right was Ricky/Ted

  • Need more hooks, and generally more space. It's not the greatest idea manufacturing bulky items in London...
