Great thread dredge!
I play a lot of board games with my son. He loves Carcassonne at the moment.
I just got Samurai Spirit but it's a bit complicated for him.
His birthday is coming up and I've got him King of Tokyo (can't wait to play that). -

King of Tokyo is great, good choice!
I've got a copy of Memoir '44 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Days-of-Wonder-DOW-7301/dp/B0002TV2NS) which you can have for £20 if you like, it's a great low-learning-curve 2-player strategy - ideal for Dad & son.

Any other genders allowed, or is it misogyny based?

Played Ludo with my 7yo and two deaf old people. Not to be recommended. Snakes and ladders wasn't much better.

I'm pretty keen. I'll PM you.

Thought I’d give this thread a bump as Christmas is coming.
What’s new?
Anyone got any recommendations.
My son is about to turn 8 and usually it’s just the two of us playing. -

I played Takenoko the other day. Really liked it.
Been playing Exploding Kittens with my 7yo.

Thanks, Takenoko has been on our wish list for a while but I’d not heard of exploding kittens.

Any suggestions for something suitable for 5/6-year-olds that won't make me want to stab myself in the face? Thinking ahead about entertainment over Christmas, and fancy trying something more fun than Peppa Pig snakes and ladders...

Coloretto / Zooloretto is another good one which might work for 5 year olds: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/27588/zooloretto

I’d not heard of exploding kittens.
It's available as an app on Android and Apple so you can try it before buying the physical version. It's a great game.

Will do, thanks.

It's a really good game, plus the artwork is lovely.
If you want small quick games I can recommend Dobble, Loveletter and Hanabi. Dobble is definitely child friendly, the other two are logic based so it depends how much your son is into that.
They're all playable by 2 people (inc. exploding kittens), but Hanabi is better than the others in this respect. The others become quite luck oriented when played with 2, Hanabi stays great. -

+1 for Dobble. Also Bananagrams for slightly older kids (spelling)

Love Hanabi. Except for the fact that everyone else in my family seems to be absolutely bobbins at Game Theory.

Played that too, absolutely great fun!
Spent the evening at Draughts, tried Eldritch Horror, really enjoyed that. Then after we'd prevented the rise of Azeroth, on the completely other end of the scale a game of Star Realms. Also great.
