I don't think it's calling for a monopoly*, but it's just an observation that it's not a homogeneous group - something I find frustrating. Personally I've found that making distinctions between what people get out of something leads to a more meaningful dialogue. On the flip side I don't think there's a right and wrong - and I'm certainly not going to tell anyone what to do - but participation medals, t-shirts and being a "finisher" isn't my bag.
