Best Rain Jackets

  • What's the best rain jacket? I have one of the latest rapha rain jacket, which keeps the rain out for sure but it's like a sauna in there and after 5 miles I end up wet from my own sweat.....the only vents are at the back and to my opinion do a really poor job...especially with a backpack on!...

    What do you use?

  • There is an inherent problem in cycling rainwear. Even 'breathable' fabrics such as Gore-tex will still be less breathable than not wearing anything. And lighter weight more breathable jackets will probably let more rain in...

Therefore if you're going to continue to put in the same effort with a jacket on as you do without, then I'd advise getting a saddlebag and losing the backpack at the very least.

Alternatively, slow down a bit when it rains and/or get a cape.

    (sorry that's not v helpful...)

  • Under arm pit vents are usually quite effective at cooling but allows water ingress. Very good skiing. But cycling not too sure.

  • Waterproof jacket = sweat
    Backpack = more sweat

Get some mudguards, a pannier/saddlebag/etc and a Gabba or something.

  • Gabba, or Perfetto as the long sleeved version is called now.

You'll still sweat but won't boil in the bag quite so much.

  • Or the traditional solution:

    1. Buy rain cape
    2. Buy Carradice saddlebag
    3. Treat self to new toe straps
    4. Use old toe straps to secure rolled up cape to loops thoughtfully provided on saddlebag
    5. (Sweatless) profit
  • I've got the Rapha Pro Cape and it's best I've had from them, though nowhere near perfect. Think I might try waterproof Gilet & armwarmers, see if that's any better

  • I like the gilet. I use it with Castelli Nanoflex arm warmers. I must admit though the classic ls jersey holds its shape really well when wet and remains quite warm enough so have ridden with just that and the gilet.

  • Right I will give the gilet a try! seems like a good compromise.

  • I only use a waterproof jacket when it's cold enough, or something biblical. Anything over 10 degree and I'll be boiling in the bag for maybe a drizzle, I'd rather wear something quick drying, but I guess it's different for very short distances or nodder speeds

  • Anyone experienced with the pedal ed nachi rain jacket? Looking tempting, but £££

  • Have you tried a poncho? Pretty good ventilation!

  • Not tried, but thinking about it/weighing up between the two. I've had a rapha rain coat for many years which is just about dead and needs replacing, so that's what I'm used to wearing. But the capes also appeal

  • I know this has been done a lot before but it's still interesting as jackets change. Rapha seem to have tons of jackets now, I'm not sure which is coolest.
a lot seem to say 'warm' or people mention that in reviews- I actually want the opposite for 15 mile hilly commute with no shower at the end.

  • My old rain jacket was great - not too hot when wearing, but warm enough to keep handy in the warmer months when coming home late. Will have to take a walk and compare what they have now, see what's closest to it

  • Mesh7

    Lot of hype

  • You mean old rapha @Haino ? I'd assumed that would be the case as who doesn't get warm doing road riding! But then I also appreciate they may be aimed at people doing big climbs at altitude etc.

  • Is there such a thing as a Brandt-approved jacket in this day and age?

    In essence:

    • Plain plastic
    • Hood
    • Tight cut
    • No vents
