I know a lot of you will say I should go to/support the LBS but when they want £5+ for something that I can get on ebay for 99p and free postage
If you do support your LBS they won't normally charge you for a brake cable, at least if they're a decent LBS. Although a decent LBS probably wouldn't charge £5 for a brake cable either...

Ouch, but they do. I have / had, not sure which is which anymore, a long term loyal cutomer of a certain LBS, the guys had always charged me a pound a cable plus the cable ends and what not, sometimes for free depends on who I speak to. All of a sudden, last time they wanted £4 a cable and when I said to them I had always paid a pound a cable and even Evans wants less for the same thing, they would not budge and told me £4 is the price for a cable. I went to another not so local for me LBS in central London that I had only visited a handful of time, they gave them me for free. So I put money in their beer box instead.
I was also charged £3 a cable from another LBS last year when I paid around £1000 for a new F+F plus parts and labour to build the bike up... Still my LBS for now...
As much as I hate it, ebay is indispensable for things like single inner cables.

On a related note, if you're looking for things to fill up your basket on CRC, they often have bmx brake cables for a quid or two, full length inner cable plus heaps of compressionless outer for less than lbs want for an inner.
