Not that easy to get the right angle for photos, but this is the 2.4 on the slightly wider rim...is the clearance that bad you reckon?

It's a bit tight, if you plan on muddy riding.
I think the old 2.4" Ralphs were known to be a big tyre. I've had both Conti X-King 2.4 and Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.35 on 30mm internal rims and the casing on both measured the same, at 61mm.

Yeah, I think I might give the x-kings a go... Especially since schwalbe have now put those bloody coloured stripes on all their top tyres.
I figure the slightly narrower x-kings should end up about the same width as the racing Ralph's were on the narrower rims, but with a better profile.
At least until I get a new back end sorted anyway. Then I should be able to go full fat. :) -

It wont matter how much clearance you have if it rains on the Old Bannack Road.
-
• #5157
Ssshhh.... It won't rain! :)
-
• #5158
manageable in summer... I would probably wrap the frame near the tyre in clear frame tape and live with it!
-
• #5159
I'd be concerned that the full width of the tyre is going to hit that wishbone if the chainstays flex.
-
• #5160
also a valid point. i assume those stays are steel
-
• #5161
Depends how rad you are going to get on it - the flex on my F-Si is wild.
-
• #5162
Hopefully that shouldn't be an issue, as belt drive bikes have to be made stiff at the stays anyway.
Also, I've got a slightly smaller 2.35 RR on the way... So I should be back to a bit more clearance again by the weekend. -
• #5163
What's the clearance like on the front? That's where I would be really concerned.
-
• #5164
Front can fit a 5" tyre. :)

Anyone got an orange clockwork, thoughts?
-
• #5166
Riding today on the spearfish and noticed the rear rim has a few cracks emanating from the general direction of the spoke holes.....bollox. Anyone got an Easton haven 29er rim knocking about? Long shot I know, but I love these wheels!

After looking at @bankiren 's excellent steed here
I've realised I need to up my gumwall game.I'm after Tan/Gum/Skin wall tyres in 2.4" width?
Maxxis Ardent are the obvious choice but the bike will do a mix of gravel/road/mud. Probably in that order. Are the Ardent's a bit extreme?
I don't think they make the Ikon in 29x2.4 gumwall. Closest is 29x2.35 blackwall or 2.20 gumwall. Onza's are lovely but $$$$ and not quite wide enough. Am I missing anything?
BTW I'm totally going for gumwalls for the looks.

Not IME. I had one ride on them, swapped them out for something grippier.
-
• #5169
What did you go for? I thought they were quite well thought of.

Magic Mary front, Mountain King rear. From what I hear, the Ardents are pretty good all rounders on hardpack, but they were terrifyingly gripless on my local loam.

Went out in storm brian today - super fun and super muddy. Budget halfords 29er still proving excellent!

I only wish it wasn't such an ugly colour

I like the look of that for a winter beater what is it?

Yeh looks great for the money
I'm thinking either switch to a 2.35 Racing Ralph, as they come up a touch smaller than my 2.4....or try Continental X-King 2.4's as recommended by @gabes ....I hear these are also a bit smaller than the 2.4 Racing Ralphs.
